Gesso capped and painted deep oak profile. What does the gesso (rabbit skin glue, whiting and water) do? It closes both the grain (in this case oak) & the corner (no join visible). After a few layers + sanding + water polishing it creates a smooth marble like surface to apply a paint finish to. Anthony Caro’s limited edition ‘Leaf Pool’ paper sculpture. The artwork is the result of a collaboration between the sculptor and the award-winning designer and paper-engineer David Pelham. Born 1924, Anthony studied sculpture at both the Regent Street Polytechnic and the Royal Academy Schools before working as a part-time assistant to Henry Moore from 1951-3. He was also a highly-regarded teacher who taught at Saint Martin’s School of Art in London for over four decades. Framed by Dorset Framers in a UV protective Perspex lid - the 3D paper sculpture book has not been physically attached; but is resting on screws through some purpose made hangers on the back of artwork. Two generations of medals 🎖️. From a few years back but realised have not posted any medal framing example on IG / website & regularly get asked if it something Dorset Framers do. One of the simplest hand finishes which can be time consuming to get just right. Not liming wax, but a white stain + shellac + top coat + sanding on an ash moulding. Virgen de la leche - from the Cusco school (17th/18th C.) Always enjoy learning about new paintings : the Cusco school of art was a Roman Catholic artistic tradition based in Cusco, Peru. The art had exclusively religious subjects. The idea behind it was that the Spanish wished to convert the Incas to Catholicism. Dorset Framers framed it in a closed corner water gilded frame with three tones of red. Joseph Edmondson (died 1786) original heraldry copperplate engravings completed in 1764. The hand colouring on these coats of arms was done at a later date. HENRY MEYNELL RHEAM 1859-1920 Honorary Secretary of the Newlyn Society of Artist. As you can see he was particularly gifted in the painting of the human figure. Look back to 10 years ago 🫣… when this Basilius Besler (1561-1629), hand coloured original engraving, headed off to a client in the USA, along with other frames. Framed by Dorset Framers in two sections. Inner was made up of two contrasting wood veneers a gilded lip, both antiqued. The spacing had to be just right & the gaps between veneers made to look like natural shrinkage. Outer section Dutch metal leaf antiqued. All profiles & double mount gesso sprayed, hand cracked & antiqued + gold inner bevel on mount. Here is an example by Dorset Framers of a deep oak profile which has been covered in handmade gesso. Gesso will close the corners, as well as remove the grain of the oak. A few layers are applied, which once dry are sanded smooth / water polished. The matt black paint capping is then applied by brush, 3 or 4 layers which are sometimes very gently sanded once dry. To finish & protect - the paint is coated with ultra matt varnish & the oak sides are waxed. The process behind one of Dorset Framers’ favourite finishes: antique Dutch black. This finish was preferred by the Dutch to the flamboyant gold leaf frames produced in the rest of Europe during the Renaissance. Some of the processes: gesso, red, tinted shellac, wire wool, wax, rottenstone & washes of umber + white. Ends up a glass like finish; this Dutch black is a labour intensive finish. Couple of closed corner frames - inner slip gessoed + painted - outer gessoed + copper leafed. The copper was then toned with spirit based stains. These were done, by Dorset Framers, for my dear friend John Spink sadly deceased earlier this year - a great man with immense knowledge of art (especially 18th & 19th c. watercolours - John wrote books, amongst others, about Samuel Prout & John Varley who were master watercolourists) and also a font of knowledge on framing styles - you will be missed. Simple gesso finish for this seascape oil on canvas - closed corner framing. Profile was built up to take the depth of canvas - wood plant screwed to the back. Around 7 coats of gesso sanded & then couple of light coats of white chalk paint - with a simple wax finish to protect. ‘Virgen de Guadalupe’ painted on a metal plate. The Virgin of Guadalupe refers to when the Virgin Mary appeared to a man, named Juan Diego from Mexico, in 1531. She holds a special place in the culture & religious life of many Mexicans - she is the patron Saint of Mexico. You learn a lot from new artwork that comes in 🤓…. Museum level throughout - top mount (triple thickness), support mount, hinging and glass all museum quality. One important thing to note about the museum quality mounts is that their bevel cuts through the same colour as the top layer (colourcore) therefore not showing a bright white bevel - which would look wrong on an old artefact.
